James Guerrero:
James Guerrero’s baseball story began at the tender age of four, with his father introducing him to the sport. This early start under his father’s watchful eye instilled a strong work ethic and a passion for baseball that would become the cornerstone of his career.
High School Excellence
James’s high school years at Fontana High School were marked by both academic and athletic excellence. He maintained an honor roll status with a 3.7 GPA and was a four-year varsity starter. His talent on the field led to significant recognition:
- All CBL 2nd team as a freshman
- All CBL 1st team during his sophomore, junior, and senior years
- All CIF in his junior and senior years
- Gold Medalist with the USA Baseball National Team 16u in 2000
- Silver Medalist with the USA Baseball National Team 18u in 2001
- Ranked 43rd overall best player in the nation in 2001/2002
- Best overall defensive player in 2001/2002
Collegiate Success
After high school, James was heavily recruited by over 20 Division 1 and Ivy League colleges, ultimately deciding to attend San Diego State University (SDSU) as Tony Gwynn’s first college recruit. He received a full-ride scholarship for four years and left after his junior year when he was drafted by the MLB. During his time at SDSU, he started all three years at shortstop and earned:
- All Mountain West Conference 2nd team honors as a freshman
- All Mountain West Conference 1st team honors as a sophomore and senior
- A nomination for the USA Baseball National Collegiate Team
Professional Career
James was drafted in the 6th round (186th overall) by the Miami Marlins in the 2005 MLB Draft. Despite being considered undersized for a second baseman, his exceptional defensive skills and speed made him a valuable player. He played for teams such as the Jamestown Jammers, Greensboro Grasshoppers, Jupiter Hammerheads, Traverse City Beachbums, and Long Beach Armada. He was recognized as a top prospect in the Marlins organization from 2005 to 2008 and was considered their top defensive infielder.
Commitment and Sacrifice
Throughout his career, James made significant personal sacrifices, often missing family events to remain focused on his training and performance. His family, particularly his father and Coach Gil, provided unwavering support, helping with tournament expenses, training, and travel. James attributes his early success to the support from his entire family, and coaches such as; Steve Hernandez, Jody Stevens, Dennis Duggins, Ruban Montano, and the legendary Tony Gwynn.
Transition to Coaching and Mentoring
After retiring in 2011 due to injuries, James found a new passion in coaching and mentoring. He coached at Kaiser and Summit High Schools in Fontana, CA, from 2011 to 2013 and resumed in 2021. He also founded JG Baseball in 2013, a developmental organization dedicated to preparing players for high school, college, and professional levels.

Family and Legacy
James’s dedication to baseball has been a source of joy for his family. His wife, whom he married in 2008, has been a steadfast supporter of his passion and the demands of a professional athlete’s life. James and his wife have two boys, one already playing baseball with a passion for the game and another in preparation, carrying forward the legacy and love for baseball.
